New 2023 Honda Civic Review 😳 Is it a good car? SHOCKING…

The 2023 Civic is a terrific car. Available in sedan and slightly shorter but more practical hatchback body styles, the Civic boasts an upscale and airy cabin with comfy seats, an easy-to-use infotainment system and ample cargo space. The Honda feels sporty and nimble when winding through turns, yet it still rides comfortably on less-than-perfect pavement. It’s zippy and fuel-efficient as well, especially if you opt for one of the turbocharged engines. The icing on the cake is the Civic’s wealth of standard safety features, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.

For decades, the Honda Civic has given budget-minded buyers a compact car that makes them feel smart for being frugal. The latest generation, including the 2023 model, carries on this tradition and goes beyond, offering handsome interior trim and several features that very recently were considered luxuries. You can pick from a quartet of four-cylinder engines and two transmissions—a continuously variable automatic (CVT) or a six-speed manual. All models come with touchscreen infotainment and a generous list of driver-assistance features, with more desirable options available throughout the lineup. The Civic’s combination of value, efficiency, niceties, and refined road manners make it a no-brainer, even when compared to similarly well-respected rivals such as the Hyundai Elantra, the Mazda 3, and the Toyota Corolla. Simply put, it’s a great car at a great price.

The Civic was fully redesigned for 2022, so for 2023, Honda has made no changes to the compact sedan and hatchback other than dropping the base LX trim. The high-performance Civic Type R hatchback rejoins the lineup this year.

Let’s review the 2023 model of Honda Civic.

First talk about Performance.

Even though it redesigned everything else about the new Civic, Honda decided to carry over the powertrain options from the previous-generation car. Base models come standard with a 158-hp 2 liter four-cylinder, while the upgraded engine continues to be a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that now makes 180 horsepower. The new Civic is offered solely as a front-wheel-drive car. Sadly, the manual transmission offered on the previous generation Civic sedan has been cut for 2022, leaving a CVT as the sole offering. A six-speed manual is still available on the hatchback model, though. Turbocharged Touring sedan needs 7.5 seconds to reach 60 mph, which is slightly slower than the last generation Civic’s result. The manual Sport Touring hatchback does slightly better at 7.3 seconds to 60 mph. Sporty Si and seriously sport high-performance Type-R variants are again part of the family.

Ride and Handling.

The Civic drives with a level of sophistication you don’t often see at this price point. The Civic feels lively and agile when navigating turns, and its taut suspension reigns in body lean with aplomb, making for a sporty and fun driving experience. The steering is crisp and well-weighted, and the brakes slow the car to a stop with confidence. The Civic also does a fine job filtering out bumps and dips in the road, yielding a comfortable and composed ride.

Interior.

The cabin has an attractive design. All controls are within easy reach and intuitive to use. It’s also roomy — the front can comfortably seat taller and shorter passengers equally well, and the rear seats will accommodate average-size adults with no problem. Rear legroom is abundant and headroom is adequate.
Outward visibility is aided by narrow front roof pillars and sideview mirrors that are mounted on the doors, freeing up your view out front. The back window is a bit short, but the multi-angle rearview camera helps you spot anything that might be behind you when backing out of a parking spot.

Infotainment Technology.

The Civic comes standard with a 7 inch touchscreen infotainment display, but a larger 9 inch unit is optional, as is a 10.2-inch digital gauge display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard and offer wireless connectivity when paired with the larger screen. Other options include in-dash navigation, a Bose stereo system, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.

Cargo space.

The Civic sedan has 14.8 cubic feet of trunk space, which is a bit better than average for the compact car class. That should be plenty of room for grocery bags or a few pieces of carry-on luggage. If you need more space, opt for the Civic hatchback and its 24.5-cubic-foot cargo area. The rear liftgate’s wide opening makes it easy to load and unload bulky items, and with the rear seats folded, there’s enough room to stow a bicycle.

Fuel Economy.

The 2023 Civic gets great fuel economy for a compact car. Models with the 1.5-liter engine can return anywhere from 27 to 33 mpg in the city and 37 to 42 mpg on the highway, depending on configuration. The base 2 liter engine yields between 30 to 37 city and 26 to 36 mpg highway. Opt for the CVT with either engine for the best gas mileage.

Safety.

It’s a downright safe choice thanks to good ratings from the NHTSA and the IIHS plus an impressive array of crash-avoidance tech. The IIHS calls it a Top Safety Pick+, while the NHTSA says it’s a five-star overall vehicle.

Standard fare across the range includes automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams, while blind-spot monitors and parking sensors are available.

Outward vision is good forward but less impressive over shoulders due to the slinky shape.

Pricing.

Its estimated price starts around at $25,000.
